Description
Introduction This qualitative study was a follow-up to an earlier research project on emotion-word use by preschool children from low-income families. This study focused on the teaching team and children in a single Head Start classroom as they interacted with each other, with families, and with administrators, particularly in relation to the use of Conscious Discipline[R], a newly adopted program-wide "social-emotional philosophy." Conscious Discipline is based on the premise that early childhood teachers model appropriate emotional expressiveness in their classrooms simply by virtue of the day-to-day interactions they experience with each other, with other adults in the program, and with children in their care.
